Night falls early in December in the Northern Hemisphere, but there are patches of brightness in the dark: exuberant displays of tens or even hundreds of thousands of glittering lights that illuminate houses, businesses, places of worship and sometimes entire neighborhoods.

Besides lights, many of these displays also include animated figures, nativity scenes, working trains or computerized musical light shows with music transmitted to the car radios of the viewers.

Although the creators of these displays often invest large amounts of time and money in their creations, there are no admission fees, although sometime donations for charitable causes are accepted. The goal of these generous individuals and families is to create something that brings joy to others, in the true holiday spirit of giving.
