Chinese New Year

Photo of Fireworks

The Chinese Spring Festival, better known in the West as the Chinese New Year begins on the new moon and ends 15 days later on the full moon.

Traditionally, all debts are paid and houses are thoroughly cleaned before the Spring Festival. Firecrackers symbolize the exiting of the old year and the welcoming of the new. At midnight on New Year's Eve, all windows and door in a house are opened to allow the old year to escape.

Chinese New Year celebrations are held not only in China and Hong Kong, but in cities throughout the world that have sizable populations of Chinese origin. The largest celebration in North America is held in San Francisco, with a large parade featuring elaborate floats, marching bands, and acrobats.
