Saint Patrick's Day Parades

Saint Patrick's Day Hat

Saint Patrick's Day (March 17) is a celebration of the patron saint of Ireland who brought Christianity to the island.

Born in England, Saint Patrick was captured by pirates in his childhood and sold into slavery in Ireland. After 6 years, he escaped back to England and later travelled to France for religious training. He returned to Ireland as a missionary where he worked to convert the Irish people to Christianity.

He is credited with using the shamrock, with its three leaves, to explain the trinity. It later became a symbol of both Ireland and Saint Patrick.

It is believed that died on March 17, 461.

The day is celebrated with parades, not only in Ireland, but across the world. Below is a listing of some of the St. Patrick's Day parades taking place in North America. Click on the name of the city to visit a Web site about the event.
