Thanksgiving Parades and Events

Watching the Macy's Thanksgiving parade on television is a Thanksgiving tradition for many of us, but if you don't live in New York City and you prefer the real thing to the TV, there are parades and other Thanksgiving events in many other cities and towns.

The Macy's parade is understandably famous, with massive balloons, many over 50 feet high, floating down the streets, dozens of spectacular floats, and some of best marching bands from across the United States.

Chicago's Thanksgiving Parade was first held in 1934 as an antidote to the dark days of the depression. It now attracts about 350,000 spectators who gather to watch clowns, giant balloons equestrian units, floats and marching bands.

Detroit's Parade also includes balloons and floats, as well the largest collection in the world of giant paper mache heads, based on those from Italian carnivals, which have been a tradition since the first parade in 1924. Like the Macy's parade, Detroit's is also telecast.

Not all the large Thanksgiving celebrations are parades: Charlottesville, Virigina holds a Thanksgiving festival that takes one back to Jeffersonian times and includes period music, dancing, concerts, battle reenactments and lectures.

Below is a listing of some Thanksgiving Parades and other events held in the United States. Click on name of any city to visit a Website about the event.

If you plan to attend an event, please check with the event's sponsor in advance in case of error, date change or cancellation.
