Unique Festivals and Events - April

Many cities and towns hold traditional annual events surrounding a particular regional food, animal or cultural activity. Strawberry Festivals, Jazz Festivals and Summer Festivals abound, but some celebrations are much more unusual, such as this month's birthday celebration for a banyan tree in Hawaii, a hillbilly festival in Kentucky and a festival for Cajun hot sauce in Louisiana.

Hana, Maui - East Maui Taro Festival

The taro is a plant used in tradional Hawaiian cuisine. Events include poi pounding, drum carving and a taro pancake breakfast. -
Pikeville - Hillbilly Days

Hillbilly Days, which benefits the Shriner's Children's Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, attracts crowds numbering in the tens of thousands for hillbilly music, a parade and a carnival. -
New Iberia - Cajun Hot Sauce Festival
April 7 - 9, 2006
Held in Louisiana's Iberia Parish, where Tabasco is manufactured, The Hot Sauce Festival features a cookoff, arts and crafts, a hot air balloon rally and live music. -
Sedalia - Show Me Gourd Festival
April 29 - 30, 2006
Event includes displays by nationally known gourd artists, a gourd hat contest and gourd workshops. -
South Pittsburg - National Cornbread Festival
April 29 - 30, 2006
Features include a cornbread cook-off, "cornbread alley", where both usual and unusual cornbread dishes are served, music and a midway.
