Many cities and towns hold traditional annual events surrounding a particular regional food, animal or cultural activity. Strawberry Festivals, Jazz Festivals and Summer Festivals abound, but some celebrations are much more unusual, such as the World Grits Festival in South Carolina, Ohio's Moonshine Festival or The Gizzard Fest in Michigan.

Most of these Sites are quite entertaining and are worth viewing for some enjoyable armchair travel even if you don't plan to visit.   • Alaska

    • Seward - Polar Bear Jump Festival
      January 21 - 22, 2006

      The main event of this festival is the Jump-off, in which participants dress in costumes and jump into the frigid waters of Resurrection Bay to raise money for charity. Other activities include a dog sled race, ice bowling, an ugly fish toss and a parade.
  • Florida

    • Fellsmere - Frog Leg Festival
      January 19 - 22, 2006

      Thousands of pounds of frogs legs are served during this event, which also includes live entertainment and a midway. For those who don't care for frog legs, gator is also available.
    • Tampa - Gasparilla Pirate Fest
      January 28, 2006

      Features a parade of Pirates, where colorfully costumed pirates share their loot by tossing trinkets to the crowd. Other events include fireworks and a street festival with music.
  • Michigan

    • Hancock - Heikinpäivä
      January, 2006

      Heikinpäivä is a Finnish-American mid-winter festival featuring a parade, Finnish foods and crafts and boot-throwing and wife-carrying contests.
  • Texas

    • San Antonio - River Walk Mud Festival
      January 12 - 15, 2006

      The Mud Festival celebrates the draining of the San Antonio River for maintenance. Features events include The Mud Pie Ball, a pub crawl, a parade and an arts and crafts show.
