Unique Festivals and Events - October

Many cities and towns hold traditional annual events surrounding a particular regional food, animal or cultural activity. Strawberry Festivals, Jazz Festivals and Summer Festivals abound, but some celebrations are much more unusual, such as the World Grits Festival in South Carolina, Ohio's Moonshine Festival or The Gizzard Fest in Michigan.

October 7, 2006
Held in the birthplace of Oliver Hardy of Laurel and Hardy fame, this festival honors the film star with a look-alike contest, screenings of Laurel and Hardy movies, skits performed by Laurel and Hardy impersonators, as well as food, crafts and a parade.

Banner Elk - Woolly Worm Festival
October 21 - 22, 2006
A celebration of Woolly Worm caterpillar, whose coat, much like the groundhog's shadow, is used in weather prediction. Woolly Worm races are held on a three-foot nylon track. You can bring your own worm from home, or purchase a specially bred and trained worm from a breeder. Other activities include, crafts, food vendors, live entertainment and of course, the Wooley Worm forecast.

Marshall - FireAnt Festival
October 14 - 15, 2006
The highlight of this festival is the Fire Ant Calling Contest. There are three categories: one to call the ants to the feeding trough, one to call out a danger alarm and another for a mating call. Another contest is the Fire Ant Round-up where competitors are given two hours to collect the most ants. Other events include an ugly face-making contest, Arts and crafts and a chili cooking contest.
