Veterans Day

Picture of Flag and Eagle

Veterans Day is a time to thank and honor all those who served in the United States military. It is always observed on November 11th, the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended fighting between the allies and Germany on November 11, 1918. Originally known as "Armistice Day," it first became a legal holiday in 1938. In 1953, after World War II and the Korean War created many new veterans, the name was changed to "Veterans Day" and the focus was expanded to honor all veterans.

Parades are held in cities and towns across the country. A National Veterans Day Ceremony takes place at the Arlington National Cemetery near Washington D.C. and includes the laying of the Presidential wreath and other honors at the Tomb of the Unknowns, followed by more tributes in the amphitheater.

In Canada, November 11th is known as "Remembrance Day" and honors those who died in war. Red poppies, a symbol of those who fell in battle, are worn in their memory and a two-minute pause of silent tribute is observed.
